Ponnan Poosari's treatment

After hearing of this traditional treatment method and finding good reviews, we decided to try it out. There were many reasons for this choice.  Firstly, having made the decision to not ever try IVF or ICSI or anything of that sort again, one felt like the road ended abruptly at a dead end.  So, even though we had started seriously looking into adoption, a desire for a biological baby somehow strengthened, if that makes sense.  Ayurvedic type treatment involving herbal medication was not really going to have major side effects.  Finally, there were good reviews from various sources... online,

Everything about the treatment can be found on the website made by another patient:
http://miracleofherbs.wordpress.com/

Our treatment experience was as follows.  We went to the clinic about 5 months after the termination fo the previous pregnancy.  Once there, we had a discussion around our history, the both of us with Dr. Nishikanth.  He described the way the medications were to be taken and handed us our medicines.  The charges were very nominal, a pittance if you think of what was spent in the previous infertility treatments. After coming back to Bangalore, we waited for the next menstrual cycle.  Subsequently, the first phase of treatment started.  This involves the woman eating a very strict diet and having a mix of a kashayam and a medicine (oil) and not taking a bath for about a week.  The effect of the medicine is to result in frequent watery bowel movements.   This process is not easy and it really helps to have someone at home to help because the lady may feel a bit dehydrated and weak.  For us, the diet was the hardest part.  The rest we managed quite ok.  After the first 7 days and a short gap, the next phase started.  This time, medication if for both the man and woman. Again, there are dietary restrictions, though relatively more relaxed.  Bathing is permitted at specified times.  After another 7-9 days of this regimen, the woman stops medication.  For the man, there is a powder (felt like some kind of powdered nut, no taste), which is to be mixed with milk and had before going to bed each night. The doctor said that a pregnancy can be expected any month after this first phase of treatment.

Following this, the menstrual cycle is an off cycle for the woman. No medication.  From the following cycle, there is a few days of medication and diet at the time of each menstrual cycle.  For - xfor the man, the powder and milk along with some restrictions (no drinking, smoking, no non-veg, plenty of water) continues.  In our case, we got lucky.  We found ourselves pregnant right after the first month's treatment and did not have to move to the second phase.

Today, as we sit with out beautiful baby in our arms, many, many thanks are due to this treatment, family and all our respective families and well wishers.  If you are also a couple dealing with infertility, reading this, our sincere best wishes, no matter which approach you choose.to become parents.. Ponnan Poosari's treatment, IVF/ICSI, Other treatments or choosing to adopt a precious angel.  The important thing is to keep your hopes up, stay happy and use all information at your disposal to make the choices that seem right to you. Good luck!

  1. Hi,
Your post are very helpful and encouraging.
We are in exactly same situation as you were in some time before, with almost no certain cause of infertility (tried 2 IUI with no luck). Some parameters/Hormones keep on changing from lab-to-lab, time-to-time with no fixed diagnosis of underlying problem if any.
Do you know of more couples who succeeded with Ponnan Pooshari's medicines?
How reliable are his medicines? Other than taking his medicines, did you do anything else differently like food, exercise or multi-vitamins which you think may have helped you?

It will be help many of us who are laboring for baby in Bangalore with no certain direction to go.

    Regards,
    SG

  2. Hi Sourabh. Good question. I wish I had a case where I knew somebody very well to describe to you. I have only referred couple people. One is going through treatment and other is yet to begin.. I have corresponded with two couples online. Apart from that one person who was referred to by our grand mother and two people from a cousin's yoga group claim success. But I don't know these cases personally to comment.

How reliable are his medicines is a difficult question. I remember him telling me that success rate is 60%, but that is an unverified number. e feel it worked for us. That much I can say for sure!

For many years while going through infertility treatments, we generally tried to exercise regularly. I used to take plently of vitamin C, Cod liver oil tabs. Tried to keep mobile phone away from pant pockets or that general region. My wife had Ovacare multi vitamin and Co-Q 10 which seemed to help our egg quality during IVF, especially given the low AMH.

During the treatment with Ponnan Pooshari, we did not have anything else apart from the Co Q 10, once the medication was done.

Hope this helps. All the best.

  3. Sincere thanks for invaluable 1st hand information.

Do you feel poor DFI or low AMH was still present when you took his medicines, and his medicines were able to overcome hurdles posed by these parameters?

What was the most difficult part of the treatment?

In case you come across any other successful couple who can share their experience, do let me know.

Best regards and blessings to new born.

  4. Thanks Sourabh! The last test we did still showed issues with high DFI and low AMH, though both had improved as a result possibly of the supplements. So my assumption is that all these issues were still there at the time of doing the treatment. The difficult part was following the diet and other restrictions, for us. One of the medicines has a particularly hideous taste.

  5. Which CoQ10 did you take? I just purchased CoQ Forte and Beco Zinc to take along with medicines but am wondering if it will be too much of supplementation.

  6. Sorry for the late reply. We had few bottles of CoQ 200 mg. In fact, we still have few bottles left! We took one per night. Actually, this is something we did personally based on our on case history and sort of a gut feel since we had always taken it for sometime since discovering it and seeing impact on AMH. You may not need any supplementation.

    1. Hi,
Thanks for your guidance. We took Ponnan Poosari's treatment for 4 months now.
Their treatment is extremely harsh for female be it first 15 days of very constrained diet (which is impossible to take for a person from north India), only medicines; or for initial 15 days of cycle with same diet and medicines with truly hideous taste causing loose motions and dehydration.
Somehow, we finished one cycle of medicines. I continued med for another 3 months since it was easier for man...just a spoonful of powder with milk.
Months after months, time passed. And at the end of it, we stand at where we started...waiting for our reason to smile.
Not sure why it did not work for us if it worked for others.

    2. Hi Sourabh, Sorry for the delay in replying. Life has been busy. I am sorry to hear about the treatment not working for you. The diet restrictions are certainly strict and harsh and the medicines taste and smell bad. We are south indians, but not sure if it made things any easier. However, compared to the pain of IVF and such stuff, this is definitely easier IMHO.
Am I understanding correctly that only you continued the treatment for 4 months and that your spouse was unable to continue after the first month? Dr. Nishikanth told us that they try for a max of one year and that chance of success is 60-70% in their experience. It does not work for some people and the reason has not been scientifically investigated/documented as is the case with most ayurveda treatment. It somehow worked for us. That is all I can say. My very best wishes for you. Sometimes life throws up a miracle when we least expect it.

    1. Dr. Manju was not our primary doctor. Dr. Beena Vasan was. So hard for us to say how she will be as a primary doctor. My impression was that she is efficient and reasonably helpful. Beyond that, hard to say.
